United Way of Greater Atlanta's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is provided in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and coalition partners in the community. VITA is available to individuals with incomes up to $67,000 and MyFreeTaxes is available to individuals with incomes up to $84,000. Last year VITA helped taxpayers get $11.2 million in tax refunds and save $3.5 million in tax prep fees. VITA provides free tax preparation services across 13 counties.

VITA FAQs:

Who is eligible for VITA?

VITA helps low-to-moderate income individuals, persons with disabilities, the elderly, those with limited English proficiency, and households with income under $67,000 annually to file their state and federal return for free.

Who is eligible for MyFreeTaxes?

MyFreeTaxes helps households making under $84,000 annually self-file their federal and state taxes online for free. Your tax return is assigned through the secure customer portal to a certified tax preparer at a VITA site. Once the return is completed, taxpayers are contacted to complete the quality review process virtually or by phone before the return can be finalized and filed. 

What is GetYourRefund?

GetYourRefund is a 100% virtual tax preparation option that allows you to access VITA services from the comfort of your home.

Are VITA and MyFreeTaxes free?

There is no fee for state and federal preparation with MyFreeTaxes or VITA if the participant meets the eligibility criteria.

Is the income eligibility limit gross or net income?

The income limit is gross income for both VITA and MyFreeTaxes

Does the VITA or MyFreeTaxes income limit have a family size?

No. This is a set requirement regardless of household size.

Can undocumented people be served through VITA or
MyFreeTaxes?

Yes, they must have an ITIN (pronounced i-10).

What documents do I need to bring?

  • Valid photo ID for taxpayer(s).
  • A Social Security card for EACH family member. Original card preferred; copies may be accepted (at discretion of tax preparer).
  • Taxpayer(s) MUST have all their W-2’s. Pay stubs are not accepted.
  • Form 1095-A: if the taxpayer received the Premium Tax Credit to help pay health insurance Child care provider letter – See template, last page
  • Banking account routing information, if using direct deposit (a voided check or bank statement with routing number printed on it.
  • A copy of last year’s tax return, if available.
  • Any document or information about money received from the IRS (Internal Revenue Service), including the advanced Child Tax Credit.
  • All 1099 forms for other income, if any. Any other tax related documents.

NOTE: Every adult listed on the tax form must sign the return.
